No it's not right, actually.

The algorithm is crazy and you can't control it.

You can't build a sustainable career on the whims of something you can't control.

Social Media is but one aspect of a successful marketing strategy. Depending on your business model it can be an important one, but even if you observe the beauty influencer space, they eventually move their followers from their social media platforms to their own spaces that they own and control.

In the media makeup world, your presentation is a huge part of how you're working, yes, but it's equally important for you to maintain and grow relationships. Ya can't effectively do that if you're worrying about ever-changing algorithms 😉

What are you doing next year? I mean what are you REALLY doing?

Nothing personal Fam, but "I don't know" is kind of the wrong answer.

I believe that confidence and clarity both, through action. The more you go out and do things and realize you can do things, the more confidence you become in doing it. However that means making decisions. And that's where I find a lot of artists to get stuck.

Making decisions does not mean putting yourself in a box. It does not mean that you cannot change, add, redirect, or redefine. It means giving yourself a target to shoot for and that is what Five Small Things is all about.

To quote Common, I want to help you see CLEAR so you can envision a path and move forward on it.

Did ya notice something when I posted about my rec

Did ya notice something when I posted about my recent Red Carpet experience?⁣

My client was co-hosting an awards show, interviewing all of the award winners. Did ya notice ALL of the folks she interviewed were also all dolled up? Yeah they were!

For every one award show/gala that you know about, there are a zillion others taking place and those attendees potentially ALL need makeup.

So where do you meet clients? Wherever they are 😉

For any business, meeting potential new clients entails putting yourself in the spaces where your clients are, NOT expecting your clients to somehow miraculously find you.

Here are five specific ways I've obtained Red Carpet or high end Event clients;

Industry Social Media Groups - PLEASE NOT those job board groups, and not even really production groups. Expand into groups with people involved with *other aspects* of the industry so you can connect with your WORKING peers who can either hire you or put you on to work.

Industry Related Organizations - Likewise professional organizations who cater around the beauty industry or the fashion industry or the like are great ways to meet people who *use the services* of makeup artists and not just hang around other makeup artists.

Film Festivals - I've told my story of setting up shop at Film Festivals many times and so have many other artists. It works.

Civic Groups - Want to meet high power executives, politicians, and other leadership? Get involved with local Civic Groups and put yourself in the same rooms with those folks.

Other Artists - Camaraderie with other artists is an absolute MUST.

Red carpet. It's nerve-racking Y'all. I was worri

Red carpet. It's nerve-racking Y'all. I was worried from the time I left my client until the this morning when I saw this video lol. The reason I differentiate it from the doing general private clients is - you guessed it – media! You always want to make any client look absolutely their best for their big moment, but it's another layer of stress when a lot of people are going to see and photograph their big moment.

My client Charell Star is an executive for the Clio awards (the Clios celebrate excellence in advertising), and she was co-host for the show.

I wasn't as nervous about the makeup obviously although it did have to last an incredibly long time – I finished her make up at 2p and I think the show started at 6p something like that. But with proper skin prep, the right foundation products, and @ppipremiereproducts Blue Marble sealer by my side that was no problem.

BUT THAT HAIR 😵. I was so nervous! She wanted a dramatic hairpiece and the last thing on Earth we wanted was any sort of "hair malfunction". But it made it the whole night and she looks like she had a great time!

This IMO is another differential with red carpet and other types of event makeup – these folks are working. Even if just attending, they're only there because of their job. But if they're a nominee, if they're a host, if they are going to go up and present one of the awards, this adds a whole other layer that must be taken into account.

So our job with red carpet clients is to make them look and feel their best so they can go up there and *do their job*, and perform to their best. They should not have to think about their hair and makeup again save for a little powder or lippie touchup.

It represents the best skills of BOTH event makeup (giving a client what they want and making it last a long time), and media makeup (will it photograph well under varying lighting conditions).
