#MakeupMonday – Short Notes

As it has been a while since my last post, it has been a while I have talked about product. This in no way means I have not been buying and using new product! Here are some thoughts about items I have recently tried as well as an ode to a dearly departed makeup kit staple…

urban decay naked palette 1 lorac pro eyeshadow palette

Urban Decay Naked vs LORAC Pro Eyeshadow Palette
When Urban Decay’s Naked palettes came out I was resistant to buying them for a super long time because almost all of the colors are shimmery and/or sparkly. I can completely understand why a consumer would adore everything about the Naked palettes, the colors are beautiful, but for a professional a palette of All Shimmer All The Time is not entirely practical. I finally relented and purchased Naked 1 when a client all but told me that’s what she wanted me to use on her. Admittedly I do like Naked 1 very much and I use it more than I thought I would. Naked 2, I gave away to a friend who loves it (personal use, she’s not a makeup artist). Enter LORAC cosmetic’s Pro Palette. This takes the concept of the neutral palette one step further by being one row of matte and one row of shimmer. Why no one has thought of this before is beyond me but it is brillant and perfect perfection in a palette. Both brands of eyeshadow give great color/pigmentation payoff and both are creamy and smooth and blend flawlessly. The LORAC palette also comes with a trial sized tube of their eyeshadow primer which converted me away from the Urban Decay Primer Potion because the LORAC is just as effective at making the eyeshadow last long and resist creasing, but it is less drying on the eyelids and less grabby.

As it is, I am happy with both purchases and I do use them both. Had it come out first, however, I probably would have just purchased the LORAC Pro palette and been done. The winner in this round? LORAC.

simple beaute by dedra

Simple Beaute by Dedra
You may know Dedra Whitt from her star turn on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (Camille Grammer’s friend and makeup artist), but I am proud to say I know her in real life as a friend and talented makeup artist. It is always exciting when a working makeup artist designs a makeup line because they bring in all of their real-world experiences of what has worked and what hasn’t in other cosmetics. After all, we work with a variety of product on a variety of faces and skins EVERY day, so we learn a lot about the Good the Bad and the Underperforming product in the process. To launch her line, Dedra has started out with the single most important element in creating a beautiful face: Foundation.

There really are not words for what a fantastic foundation Simple Beaute by Dedra is.

This foundation is so fab that I am not going to go into it right now, it deserves a full review with photographs which I will be posting soon. In the meantime, you can see the line at her blog, Simple Beaute by Dedra. While you’re there, go ahead and subscribe to her blog so you can read all of her tips insights into beauty.

tom ford beauty cream color for eyes

Tom Ford Beauty
As you know if you are a regular Makeup to Go! reader, I do not base my reviews on the latest, greatest thing to come out. Firstly, I think there are several great Blogs – like Temptalia – that do that already. Secondly, as a pro makeup artist I base my selections on performance after I have had time to really use a product. The Hype Train came pulling into the station at full speed when Tom Ford Beauty came out and even though it costs upwards of $35 per item (meaning the least expensive items in the line start at $35), I have read all types of reviews from end-consumers, semi pros, etc. raving about the line. OK – I am not at all opposed to luxury lines, in fact I have an entire kit comprised of only luxury lines as opposed to my pro-line staples, but I’m saying any makeup product has to perform for me to get excited about it, particularly $45 lip glosses. Products have to wear well, look good in multiple lighting situations and possible lighting changes, and photograph well, etc. Reality Check: Not all luxury brands fit this bill. Most were made for personal, not professional, use. I went ahead and purchased a cream eyeshadow and an eyeshadow quad for my Luxury kit, and I have to say I am pleased and impressed, particularly with the cream eyeshadow. Cream Eyeshadows in particular are tricky; the right one can intensify color and help powder eyeshadow stay in place and last longer. The wrong cream eyeshadow will make color crease and slip off or fade away faster. I have used the Tom Ford Beauty Cream Color for Eyes alone and with powder shadow and it is beautiful, creamy, richly colored, and does not crease. #Winning.

Ode to a Brush

i miss my makeup brush

circled – a great makeup warrior #RIP

A few months ago at the end of a long shoot day I left my touch-up bag behind in the studio where we were shooting. Despite contacting everyone immediately, no one claims to have seen the bag. Didn’t really make sense, particularly since I knew exactly where I’d left it, but no biggie. No biggie until I realized the reality of the truth – the first Professional Makeup brush I’d ever purchased was in that touchup bag. As you can see by the photo, I owned that brush for a long, long time. It was a true workhorse. A throwback to a golden age in makeup where brushes were made TO LAST and this one did. I still remember buying that drug at Rexall Square drugstore on the corner of La Cienega and 3rd street back when they were open 24-hours and they were known for being a trend spot to get the latest and greatest in cosmetics. I do not remember the brand of the brush but I remember it was $35, which was not a small amount of money for me to invest in my kit at that point in my career. It was an investment, however, that paid for itself I do not even know how many times over. I used it on every job I had for over a decade, up until that fateful day this past August when she ran away from me :( I do not know who ended up with her, but I hope she’s found a new home with someone who can really appreciate her. To the day that I lost her, she never lost her shape, she never shed ONE hair, she held product beautifully and distributed it evenly. I hope whoever has her now can appreciate that even if you spend twice as much nowadays, you are in no way guaranteed to get a brush even half as good. Goodbye miss Purple Handle Powder Brush! You will always be an All Star VIP in my makeup career!

#MakeupNews – BREAKING: Urban Decay Decides NOT To Sell In China!

JUST ANNOUNCED! Urban Decay decides NOT to sell in China. This is a victory for those of us against animal testing as China requires animal testing for all cosmetics products sold there. This is also a victory for those of us who love the Urban Decay product line, and love their ethos of being as vegan and as cruelty free as possible. We here at Makeup to Go! applaud Urban Decay on what was not an easy decision to make. China is a huge emerging market and there was potentially lots of money to be made by selling there. Hopefully the Chinese governing body over these policies will reconsider animal testing (idealistic, yes, but one can hope). In the meantime I applaud Urban Decay for choosing conscience over profit.

Urban Decay’s full statement on the matter can be read here: Urban Decay China Statement, 7/6/2012

(apologies for any type-os. This post is being made remotely from my iPad)

#MakeupMonday – Red, White and Blue

As all makeup mavens know, summer is the time when we naturally lighten up on our makeup. The easy-breezy flow of the season combined with heat and/or humidity says it’s time to put away heavy makeup and step into the light.

Summer is also, in my opinion, the perfect time to step outside of your comfort zone and play with some color. Pops of color against an otherwise bare face look fresh, flirty and young. Whether you’re at a backyard barbecue, hitting the beach, or workin’ it late night at the club, summer is the time to be be a bit daring and have a bit of fun while enjoying the sun’s bounty. In America we are about to celebrate the 4th of July holiday. Therefore, in keeping with a patriotic theme, I’m going to be looking specifically at creative ways to use red, white, and blue makeup. Please Note: I am not necessarily advocating wearing all three at once (although it can be done ;) ).

RED:
When I work with private clients, part of the battle is often getting them to trust in red lipstick. Now is SO the time to lose your fears about wearing red lipcolors. Everyone knows the pale skin/red lip combo but red lips with tanned skin is gorgeous. If you are gun-shy fear not! There are formulations at every point of the spectrum nowadays from very bold to sheer and subtle.

tarte cosmetics lipsurgence lip tint feverrevlon lip butter cherry tart
Mild - If you just want to stick a toe in the world of red lipcolor, sheer tints are a fab way to go. Tarte Cosmetic’s LipSurgence™ lip tints come in 3 formulations (original, matte, and luster), feel great on the lips and impart a fabulous tint of color. All 3 are fairly subtle but for the super shy, LipSergence™ Luster in “Fever” is an easy way to slide into red. Likewise, Revlon’s ColorBurst™ Lip Butters are silky smooth and hydrating with a sheer wash of color. ColorBurst offers a few different red-ish shades, but my personal favorite is the straight ahead “Candy Apple” which is a true red, flattering for almost all skin tones. Continue reading →

#IMATS Los Angeles 2012 Wrap Up

I ended up having a fantatic time at the International Makeup Artist Trade Show Los Angeles this year and I figured I’d better write about it before no one cares anymore. First a moment of full disclosure on why I am so late…

This time last week I was sitting in jury duty awaiting questioning for jury selection, and I was in more pain than I have ever been in at any point before in my life. During the previous week I had what I thought was some minor shoulder soreness, and by last Friday night I was sitting in the emergency room unable to move my right arm. Did I mention that I am a right-handed makeup artist? Eventually the pain went away but my arm remained immobile. What I had going seemed similar to a condition that can last for as long as a year or two so needless to say I was in a bit of a panic as to how I was going to take care of myself and work. Through good treatment at the emergency room, good self care at home, and a little bit of Grace, my arm regained enough mobility by Sunday for me to do a basic portraiture shoot job. A couple of days ago (say Wednesday this week) was the first time that I could sit at a computer and type without discomfort. It has been a wild week!

Therefore, needless to say all of this changed my plan for IMATS. I was originally planning to go to the Pro Night and then go for a little span of time on the two weekend days. Instead I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been well enough to attend on Sunday. And I was super fortunate to have a running buddy at the show as my friend and fab makeup artist Renee Loiz, was also going that day so we were able to meet up.

Due to my compressed schedule I was not able to attend any of the workshops, lectures, or demos. This was a real bummer as there were several on Saturday I really, really wanted to see including the incomparable Kabuki (WHICH I hear was sadly under-attended by the largely non-pro crowd on Saturday). That aside I did much more walking the floor than I had in years. Years. It just seemed like it was waaaaaaay less crazy this year than last. The usual suspects (MAC, MUFE, NYX, etc.) were bustling but otherwise Renee and I were able to walk the floor, look at and touch product, and talk to the artist/representatives at the booths. Here is the scoop on what I got…

parian spirit cosmetics brush cleaner
1 ) Parian Spirit Brush Cleaner
Gotta start with the basics and this was THE MAIN thing I needed. I had to make sure I left the Trade Show with this product in my hand. I know brush cleaners are very personal to each artist and everyone has their favorite. Parian Spirit is my favorite and it has been ever since I learned about them clear back at the very first IMATS show (yes, I’m old). NOTE: I am noticing a lot of young artists do not realize that Japonesque brush cleaner IS Parian Spirit (even says so on the Japonesque label). Instead of buying small retail bottles it makes more sense for a working artist to get the larger professional sizes of Parian Spirit. Continue reading →

#MakeupMonday – In Praise of Minis

Tarte Cosmetics Ring It In Mini Cheekstain Set

As an artist and as a woman I am a minimalist. When it comes to my makeup – both personal and professionally – I have always aspired to carry as little as possible and still be able to get the job done. When I heard that makeup powerhouse Francesca Tolot often carries little more than a small sized Art Bin™ box, she became my patron saint. I do not know if that rumour was ever true but it’s my goal and I am sticking to it!

One of the ways I keep both my kit and my own personal makeup bag small is by carrying minis – travel sized versions of my favorite products – whenever possible. From nail polish to skincare to eyeliners, if you want a mini version it probably exists. Here are some of my favorites new and old.

1 ) Tarte Ring It In Mini Cheekstain Set (pictured above) -
I mentioned these here on Makeup to Go! when they first came out, but these are worth a second mention. As we all know, I think the Tarte Cheekstains are some of the most fab makeup items ever, and this little set in three great shades is just the perfect size for work and play. Continue reading →

#MakeupMonday: New Products I Have My Eye On 1

Dolce & Gabbana Perfect Finish Creamy Foundation

Dolce & Gabbana Perfect Finish Creamy Foundation

Hello hello.

This post is coming to you remotely as I’m actually leaving town for a job. Hence I shall have to keep this one brief. But one of the joys of being a makeup artist is there is always new product to try. So for this Makeup Monday I thought I’d highlight a few items I have my eye on. I do not have these in my possession as yet, but I likely will soon.

Dolce and Gabbana Passion Duo Gloss Fusion Lipsticks
1 ) Dolce & Gabbana Passion Duo Gloss Fusion Lipstick
Let me join everyone else by talking about this amazing sounding new product. This is a lipstick/lipgloss 2-in-1 product with the outer rim being lipstick, and the inner circle being the gloss. Instead of having a matching lipgloss as these types of products generally do the gloss component of this product comes in contrasting colors which when applied will create a fabulous 3 color with a burst of shine. When I looked at these in person some seemed lower in contrast, and some seemed higher contrast to the lipstick color but that will depend on how pigmented the glosses actually are so more to follow once I actually own a few of these. In any event, these will be fun to play with for makeup mavens and makeup artists alike. Continue reading →

#MakeupMonday – Prepping for Fall

Pangea Organics Facial Scrub

Pangea Organics Facial Scrub

While most women are mourning the end of Summer I am singing Hallelujah for the start of Fall! Autumn, as I’m sure I’ve mentioned before and I am certain I will mention again, is my favorite season of the year, November being my fave month (Thanksgiving and birthday month!) Admittedly this probably comes from having been born and raised in Southern California where I get all the sunny beautiful days without all the heat of summer. Makeup-wise, fall is a time of transition between the easy breezy days of summer and the deeper tones of winter. It is also likely that you’ll need to start tweaking your skincare routine a bit.

Trend-wise, Fall 2011 went refreshingly against the grain. While the tendency is to jump to dark and dramatic colors in the cooler and colder months, this year the trend is more towards a softer, more neutral palette. Soft eyes (even when “smokey”), soft lips, a soft blush of cheek and a soft matte finish is not only more wearable on the day to day for more women, it is also more flattering for more women. Dramatics can be great but the harder, darker colors can also be quite aging. Here are a few things I am loving going into Fall… Continue reading →

#MakeupMonday – Cyber Monday Makeup Deals

Lorac Cosmetics Cyber Monday Special Collection

Lorac Cosmetics Cyber Monday Special Collection

For the past several days I’ve been receiving emails about Cyber Monday sales from some of my various favorite cosmetics lines. I’d never heard of Cyber Monday before, so I looked it up on Wikipedia and apparently it’s the online store equivalent to Black Friday. Why they can’t just have their sales on Black Friday is beyond me (and some of these sales actually did start on Black Friday), but I’m never one to turn down a good deal on makeup. With that, here are some Cyber Monday sales to catch before they’re gone. I’m posting early today so you have time to get your shop on before these sales end.

Armani
Armani has a “Friends and Family” deal going with 20% off and Free Shipping with purchases of $75 or more. Considering that Armani’s famed (well deserved fame) foundations cost $45 a bottle, it shouldn’t be difficult to reach the required purchase amount. Armani also has some nice Holiday Gifts sets going which I discuss in my Holiday Gift Sets follow up.

Bobbi Brown Cosmetics
Not really having a sale in terms of discounts on products, but they are giving free shipping and free deluxe samples with purchase. Use code HAPPY11 at checkout.

Korres
Korres is offering more discounts and offers than I can list, and being the sneaky folks that they are, they actually started their sale on Sunday. In addition, starting on Monday they will be having select hourly specials. Clearly Korres is going all out for Cyber-Monday.

Lorac
Lorac has a Cyber Monday collection featuring $100 worth of fab products for $25. While you’re at the Lorac site, don’t forget to check the VIP section for great discounts on discontinued items.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics
OCC is offering 20% off of it’s fabulous Lip Tars in a one day only sale. Shop now or forever hold your peace. Enter code CYBER 2010.

Peter Thomas Roth Skincare
Peter Thomas Roth is an amazing skincare line and it is what I use in my kit along with Dermalogica. PTR rarely discounts, but they are having one now: 20% off excluding sale items, use code FRI2010. Take advantage of this rare opportunity. I sure am!

Smashbox Cosmetics -
They are currently having another Friends and Family sale, and it ends on Monday. Enter code FFSB20 at checkout.

Stila
You can get 20% off online purchases with the code STILALOVES . However, that’s not the big deal. The Big Deal beginning on Cyber Monday from Stila is the online warehouse sale. 80% off selected items. Yes. 80% off. Run don’t walk because even though the online warehouse sale is through December 3rd, items will sell out quickly. Go here for Stila’s Online Warehouse sale.

Shu Uemura
My beloved Shu is having a 20% off purchases of $50 or more. Shu always offers free shipping for purchases over $50, so that makes this is a nice little deal. As we in the US can no longer go to stores or counters for our Shu Uemura needs, these online sales will have to suffice. Use code WISH2010

Tarte
Tarte is having a nice little “secret” sale. 30% off sitewide (15% off limited-edition holiday items) PLUS get FREE charcoal emphasEYES & FREE shipping when you spend $25 or more. Use code CYBERMON

Three Custom Color -
Three Custom Color has jumped into the fold with a cyber monday special of their own. Through midnight tonight you can get 35% off. Use code cybermonday. And as always, 3CC (as we pros call them) offers free shipping on orders of $75 or more.

Urban Decay
Presumably to make way for new product, Urban Decay is selling off select items of some of its most beloved products at unbelievable discounts.
