2 ) Stila Los Angeles Warehouse Sale
NOT to be confused with the online warehouse sale, this is the real deal. Line up early (some folks start lining up at 4am, I think we got there at around 6am last year) or do not bother.

#MakeupMonday – In Praise of Minis

Tarte Cosmetics Ring It In Mini Cheekstain Set

As an artist and as a woman I am a minimalist. When it comes to my makeup – both personal and professionally – I have always aspired to carry as little as possible and still be able to get the job done. When I heard that makeup powerhouse Francesca Tolot often carries little more than a small sized Art Bin™ box, she became my patron saint. I do not know if that rumour was ever true but it’s my goal and I am sticking to it!

One of the ways I keep both my kit and my own personal makeup bag small is by carrying minis – travel sized versions of my favorite products – whenever possible. From nail polish to skincare to eyeliners, if you want a mini version it probably exists. Here are some of my favorites new and old.

1 ) Tarte Ring It In Mini Cheekstain Set (pictured above) -
I mentioned these here on Makeup to Go! when they first came out, but these are worth a second mention. As we all know, I think the Tarte Cheekstains are some of the most fab makeup items ever, and this little set in three great shades is just the perfect size for work and play. Continue reading →

#MakeupMonday – The Basics: Cheekcolor

Nars Orgasm Blush

The Classic - Nars Orgasm Blush

Needless to say, all of the products I’ve mentioned thus far in this “The Basics” series are my completely subjective recommendations. I recommend them based on my usage and generally long-term satisfaction with a product. If another makeup artist were writing these articles, they might recommend entirely different products. That said, things are about to become even more subjective as we move away from skin/foundation products and into the vastly huge world of color products. We begin our look with Cheek colors.

I am starting with cheek color because I find that when it comes to makeup most women focus on their eyes, some of us focus on our lips and then cheeks are generally ignored. This is unfortunate because few things will make a woman look fresher and YOUNGER faster than a well applied cheek color. In no particular order, here are some cheek color products that I love and use on the regular… (for cheek colors specific to women of color, revisit my previous article “Beauty Noir: Best Blushes for Darker Toned Beauties”) Continue reading →

#MakeupMonday – Like Gilt Groupe? You’ll Love Beauty Story

beautystory

I’m sure by now you’ve heard of Gilt Groupe which offers private sales to it’s membership. I was introduced to Gilt Groupe via a stylist friend and at that time you had to be either invited or referred (UPDATED – see below), but once you were in they really did have excellent sale prices. Well what about us beauty mavens? Enter Beauty Story.

I discovered beauty story when my beloved Three Custom Color had a sale via their service. Like Gilt Groupe, Beauty Story offers private, exclusive sales to it’s members often at serious discounts. Unlike Gilt Groupe, membership in Beauty Story is – at least for now – open. What I particularly like about Beauty Story is that in addition to doing partnerships with some relatively well known brands (if memory serves there was a Smashbox sale a while back as well) they also feature some of the more indie/difficult to get brands like Paul and Joe and Nvey. And if you’re wondering about price, even though I get a professional discount on Three Custom, it was still worth it for me to buy via Beauty Group’s sale.

Sign up with Beauty Story now and start shopping and saving!

(Disclaimer – Nope, they aren’t paying me. They don’t know me and they don’t even know I’m doing this little story on them. I just really like the service and thought I’d tell my readers about them…)

EDIT: Gilt Groupe wrote and informed moi that they do have a code for those who want to sign up but do not have a referral/invitation. Please see the comments section. Thanks for letting us know, Gilt Groupe! :)

#MakeupMonday – All About Stains

Benefit Cosmetics PosieTint

Benefit Cosmetics PosieTint

In a previous MakeupMonday I mentioned using lip/cheekstains as a means of lightening up one’s makeup routine. In that article I mentioned perennial favorites, Benefit Benetint and Becca Cosmetics Beach Tint. Many readers, however, have cried out for more. Here then are some of my favorite tints…

1) Tarte Cheekstain – It’s pretty crazy that I didn’t mention this one right off the bat, but I guess I was trying not to seem too biased. This product absolutely never leaves my kit and I have a shade that I use on myself as well (yes, they have shades for every skin-tone of Divas! :D ). They add subtle sheen, a sheer yet buildable amount of color and dry to a natural finish on the skin. AND they have no parabens, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances, etc. Continue reading →
