#MakeupMonday – The Basics: Cheekcolor

Nars Orgasm Blush

The Classic - Nars Orgasm Blush

Needless to say, all of the products I’ve mentioned thus far in this “The Basics” series are my completely subjective recommendations. I recommend them based on my usage and generally long-term satisfaction with a product. If another makeup artist were writing these articles, they might recommend entirely different products. That said, things are about to become even more subjective as we move away from skin/foundation products and into the vastly huge world of color products. We begin our look with Cheek colors.

I am starting with cheek color because I find that when it comes to makeup most women focus on their eyes, some of us focus on our lips and then cheeks are generally ignored. This is unfortunate because few things will make a woman look fresher and YOUNGER faster than a well applied cheek color. In no particular order, here are some cheek color products that I love and use on the regular… (for cheek colors specific to women of color, revisit my previous article “Beauty Noir: Best Blushes for Darker Toned Beauties”) Continue reading →

#MakeupMonday – Prepping for Fall

Pangea Organics Facial Scrub

Pangea Organics Facial Scrub

While most women are mourning the end of Summer I am singing Hallelujah for the start of Fall! Autumn, as I’m sure I’ve mentioned before and I am certain I will mention again, is my favorite season of the year, November being my fave month (Thanksgiving and birthday month!) Admittedly this probably comes from having been born and raised in Southern California where I get all the sunny beautiful days without all the heat of summer. Makeup-wise, fall is a time of transition between the easy breezy days of summer and the deeper tones of winter. It is also likely that you’ll need to start tweaking your skincare routine a bit.

Trend-wise, Fall 2011 went refreshingly against the grain. While the tendency is to jump to dark and dramatic colors in the cooler and colder months, this year the trend is more towards a softer, more neutral palette. Soft eyes (even when “smokey”), soft lips, a soft blush of cheek and a soft matte finish is not only more wearable on the day to day for more women, it is also more flattering for more women. Dramatics can be great but the harder, darker colors can also be quite aging. Here are a few things I am loving going into Fall… Continue reading →

#MakeupMonday – The Basics: Face Powders

T. LeClerc Face Poudre in Banane

T. LeClerc Poudre Libre en Banane

I have a confession: I LOVE face powder. Love Love Lovey Love Love. It softens colors, smooths the complexion, helps blending, erases mistakes, sets the makeup, on and on. It’s a wonder product! Yet I find most women simply wonder “What am I supposed to do with this?” Let me assure you: Once you get the right formulation and learn to use it the right way, you too will be a convert. As I have stated before I am planning a series of video tutorials and probably one of my first ones will be using powder correctly but in the meantime in The Basics we will cover some of the best powders out there and what makes a powder one of the best. NOTE: I am really only talking about loose powders in this article. Yes, I know many of you are more used to pressed powders. Pressed powders are great for touching up, but they are not the wonder product that is loose powder. If you are really fixated on pressed powder, most of these brands make pressed powder versions of these loose powder products. I invite you, however, to allow loose powder to sweep you off of your feet… Continue reading →

#MakeupMonday – Spring Fling 2011

Happy Spring!

Today is the official first day of spring, but if you are experiencing the kind of weather I am, it does not yet feel like it! Even here in “sunny” California we are having cold and rain, and actually I went on a camping trip this past weekend and had to deal with driving wind, rain, hail and even some snow. Yikes! Weather like that only makes feeling pretty with bright fresh color seem all the more special and important. All the cosmetics lines have been rolling out their Spring collections for the past few weeks and after having tried some*, here’s my picks for the some of the best of the lot.

sonia kashuk cosmetics great awakenings face palette
1 ) Sonia Kashuk Cosmetics – Great Awakenings Face Palette
At the top of the list has to be this fantastic palette by Sonia Kashuk Cosmetics. Included are 4 “more than” neutral eye-colors, a deep brown powder/cake eyeliner, a perfect pinky/peachy blush and three pretty lipglosses. All for $19.99! And if you have never tried Sonia Kashuk Cosmetics, her line is en par with any department store brand, full stop. I cannot big-up the Sonia Kashuk line enough, they are definitely my favorite mass-market brand. This palette is yet another reason why. NOTE: This palette is a limited edition item so run don’t walk!

Iman Cosmetics Eye-Con Collection
2 ) Iman Cosmetics – Eye-Con Collection
My other favorite mass market brand is Iman, and Iman Cosmetics makes luxury affordable for women of color. The Eye-Con palette is a fantastic addition to the line because so often women of color cannot join in on the fun, trendy spring colors because most (non-professional) eyeshadows are not pigmented enough to show on darker skin-tones. Iman has adapted all the “trend colors” for spring into pigmented yet wearable formulations that go on smoothly and last long. This is a great palette.

Jouer Cosmetics Glisten Brightening Powder
3 ) Jouer Cosmetics Glisten Up collection
Jouer’s Glisten Up collection is exactly what you want for Spring: light and airy colors and formulations to brighten you up from the doldrums of winter. Taking a cue from the last series of Fashion Week runways, Jouer has gone with a shimmer inspired theme. My favorite item out of the collection is the versatile Glisten Brightening Powder. We Makeup Artists swear by products like these to add sheen and light to the face and body. What is particularly nice about Jouer’s version is it is finely milled so your face is glowy not sparkle-y. The lipglosses are sparkle-y so a little goes a long way, but a touch in the center of the lower lip makes lips look fuller or a sheer sweep over the entire lip takes your face from day to night in an instant.

Maquillage Givenchy Siena Silhouette eye palette
4 ) Givenchy Collection Printemps-Eté Naïvement Couture –
Leave it to the French to interpret Spring quite differently. This collection features some of the “light and airy” color stories that you would expect for spring, but mixed in are interesting smokier, sultrier combinations. Givenchy is famous for their “Prisme Quads” which are 4 complimentary colors in one palette which can be used singularly or in any combination to achieve a myriad of colors. Not necessarily for a makeup newbie, but for the serious artiste Givenchy products are consistently amazing.

Paul and Joe Beauty Lipstick C
5 ) Paul and Joe – Parasol Collection
Paul and Joe is an “atelier” line out of France which I love. They are kind of “cult” and rather difficult to get, although it’s becoming easier since making their way into Beauty Habit and some Sephora stores. Los Angeles makeup artists and other makeup-istas in the know have always had access to them via the fabulous Beauty Closet store. What I love about this collection are the colors – which are the perfect kind of pastel, IMO, soft but not too “white” in cast – and the rich formulations. Paul and Joe cosmetics really feel like no other…and they wear incredibly well. Often times softer colors drift and either fade away or do not stay “true”. Once you apply these colors they are on and they stay on and stay the same beautiful color. My personal pick is the Lipstick C which comes in three shades of perfectly pretty pinks (color shown is “Afternoon Delight”).

*I generally do not review a product until I have actually tried it in some form of a Real World application, usually on one of my jobs/photoshoots. While I do receive product as a professional makeup artist (usually from editorial credits), none of the products discussed were given to me. These are all products I have purchased to try out in my Kit.

#MakeupMonday – Sonia Kashuk Cosmetics

Sonia Kashuk Breast Cancer Research Foundation Limited Collection Fall 2010

Sonia Kashuk Breast Cancer Research Foundation Limited Collection Fall 2010

As a pro artist who works both in media and with private clients, I am always on the hunt for brands that work well in front of the camera as well as in everyday use. Because of this, if you are a follower of this board, I do tend to favor pro artists & some prestige brands. Reason being that brands marketed for consumers and lower price point brands tend to be lesser pigmented, not blend as well, and fade quickly. There is one very very notable exception to this rule and most artists I know sneak this brand into their kits: Sonia Kashuk Cosmetics. Continue reading →

Drugstore That Delivers

Black Radiance Starry Eye palette in Seductress

Black Radiance Starry Eye palette in Seductress

I recently had someone email me that I tend to turn my nose up to drug store cosmetics. This is a true statement. By and large drug store products are not as good as their more premium counterparts and certainly nowhere in the ballpark of professional products. This does not mean, however, that there aren’t a few notable exceptions. Here are some goodies that have made it into my personal and professional kit over the years.

1 ) Stating the ObviousMaybelline Great Lash and L’oreal Volumizer mascaras. Let’s just get these out of the way. Every makeup artist I know has one or the other or both in their kit. I’m a Great Lash girl, myself. Yes it’s thick. Yes it can be goopy. Yes you have to work it. But the rewards are worth the effort and I think Great Lash is just one of the best cosmetics products ever, drugstore, prestige, or professional.

2 ) Sonia Kashuk Cosmetics – I’m always surprised how many people aren’t hip with Sonia Kashuk cosmetics. A high-end makeup artist (with clientele such as Cindy Crawford and Kim Bassinger), Kashuk decided to make a department store quality brand available in a mass market retailer (Target). By simplifying the packaging instead of the product, the Sonia Kashuk line was able to keep the quality where it matters most. Notable items in the line are the “How to Create a Smokey Eye” palette, and the mighty, mighty “Arch Alert” brow kit. Of the items I discuss in this article, the Arch Alert kit along with Great Lash are the two absolute must-have staples for my Kit.

3 ) Vichy – Skipping to skincare, Vichy is a fantastic line. I don’t know what’s happening nationally, but here in Los Angeles you can actually get Vichy at good ole CVS (which is like Long’s Drugs, Duane Reade, etc.). Vichy is particularly known for it’s hydrating products that are great for oily and/or reactive skin and it’s anti aging products. The rub – Vichy is on the higher end of drugstore in terms of pricing. Of particular note are the Normaderm Pro Mat Ultra Moisturizer and the Reti-C Intensive Corrective Care moisturizer. Vichy also used to make the best lip balm ever. I mean ever. And then they discontinued it. Why do companies do this???

4 ) Black Radiance and Black Opal Cosmetics – One of the things that makeup artists don’t like about drugstore brands vs. professional brands is that drugstore brands are usually not very well pigmented. Because of this the colors don’t read true, and the product wears off quickly. Want true colors that last? Look to brands made for black consumers. Due to the increased skin pigment, the makeup products made for black skin has to have more pigment or it just won’t show up. I mention both of these two brands because I think they both have their strengths. Black Opal has been touted by makeup artists such as Sam Fine and Dick Page for years because their foundations and powders are actually quite good (the line was initially developed by a black dermatologist). They also have a great selection of bronzers and lipcolors. Black Radiance has surprisingly good eyeshadows and eyeliners in all the bright, fun colors. They are smooth and creamy enough to actually blend (most drugstore brands are too dry and chalky) and again, they are pigmented enough where you can actually see the color.

So while I’ll always prefer premium makeup products, there are a nice amount of good quality drugstore/mass market brands to keep a girl pretty and chic. Look for future updates of the best products I find in the mass retail segment…
