Wanna Be A Pro Artist? Amazing Opportunity

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you know I have preached the gospel of “Go Buy ‘The Hair, Makeup and Fashion Styling Career Guide‘” multiple times. I also recommend taking Ms. Wright’s classes if at all possible. Well, if you’ve been chomping at the bit but finances have been holding you back here is the opportunity for you! Crystal Wright Live is having an amazing contest in support of the verge of having 5000 followers on Twitter. The winners will receive selected items including:

1 Hair Makeup & Fashion Styling Career Guide
1 2012 Packaging Your Portfolio Workshop
1 set of the 1-Day Workshop DVDs
1 T-Shirt. 1 Toolbelt
1 30 Days @ 100% book
1 30 Days @ 100% CD
1 Portfolio Building Webinar
1 Business 101 Webinar
1 Marketing Yourself Webinar

One winner will be chosen each week to receive one of the above prizes. HOWEVER you gotta enter the contest to win, and there are specific steps for entry into the contest. For more information visit Crystal Wright Live Twitter Contest and do what it says.

Good luck! I almost wish I could do all of that all over again! (but I don’t have to because following her advice already worked for my career. So go! Enter now! :) )

It Is Not Workshop Time….

OK so there are more than a few exciting developments are taking place with regards to how I want to conduct my workshops moving forward (product sponsorship, facilities, and my “patented” teaching methodology) that are necessitating my moving the workshops into the New Year. Trust me: It will be worth the wait! Teaching is a passion, not my primary money maker. I still work primarily as an on-set artist. I teach because working with new artists inspires me and it is my way of giving back to the makeup community. Therefore – I do not ever want to do just any ole class. I want my classes to ROCK!

In the meantime as many emerging artists were interested in my classes, bear in mind that I do teach private lessons as well as small groups and those can be arranged more easily on a more flexible schedule. Please Email Us for more information or you can Visit Here to read about the options. Thanks so much for your patience (and thanks to those who’d already signed up for their flexibility) and I look forward to fabulous classes in 2012!

Sale Alert – Stila Online Warehouse Sale

Stila One Step Foundation

Stila One Step Foundation - gone but not forgotten

Stila is currently having it’s Semi Annual Online Warehouse Sale . What caught my eye and why I’m posting about it is that they are apparently either discontinuing or re-formulating their fabulous One Step Foundation, which is a primer and foundation all in one formula. This was one of my favorite foundations to recommend for daily wear (as opposed to the foundations I use for photography) so I’m bummed if it is being discontinued. In any event, whether you are one of the many ladies whom I’ve introduced this product to, or you have been looking for a comfortable daily wear foundation with light but complete coverage, you may want to stock up before this product is all gone… In addition to the One Step Foundation, other sale items of note just on cursory glance are

- Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer

- select shades of the ever popular and fab Lip Glazes

- select shades of the single Eye Shadow Pans including some of the mattes

- several palettes including the fabulous Color Wheel palette that was introduced last year

So run don’t walk and get ‘em while you can! Stila Semi Annual Online Warehouse Sale .

#MakeupBizTalk – The Art of the Freebie

Blank Magazine Issue #58

© P. De Luna / Makeup and Hair Tania D. Russell

Don’t be duped, but don’t let opportunity pass you by…

There is a fabulous website entitled “Should I Work for Free” which features a flow chart of all the possible if/when situations that a freelancer might face when approached for unpaid work from a client. It serves as a good reminder that it is not just makeup artists who are constantly approached for freebie “gigs” all the time. All freelancers are, particularly those in the Creative industries, particularly in a down economy. Basically, as you can see on the chart, most roads lead to “No” – which is as it should be. But why is it, as a freelancer, so difficult to say “No”? Because as a freelancer networking is part of the game and you really do never know where or when opportunity might strike. People often say “well would your mechanic work for free” and the answer is rightfully No, but that hardline/black and white attitude doesn’t really work in a field where your success is greatly dependent upon constant marketing and networking. Here are my tips for deciding whether or not to take an unpaid gig. Continue reading →

Maquillaje Para Go: la Exposición de Maquillaje de Los Angeles 2011

… and now here is Makeup to Go’s contributing Blogstress En Español, Delia Jimenez Owens, with her wrap up of The Makeup Show LA 2011 (English version below)

Continue reading →

#MakeupMonday – The Makeup Show Los Angeles 2011 Wrap Up

The last weekend in February was a big weekend for us makeup artists here in Los Angeles. Not only were there two major awards shows happening (the Indie Spirit Awards on Saturday, and the granddaddy of them all, the Oscars, on Sunday) but also the weekend of The Makeup Show presented by Metropolitan Events.

Sadly, the fact that it fell over a big work weekend lessened the amount of time I was able to spend at the show as I had private clients for both awards shows. I did, however, manage to make it for a period of time both days and take in both the education and shopping experiences. Continue reading →

Award Show Watch – Oscars 2011

2011 awards show season is a wrap with the passing of the biggest awards show of them all – the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards, aka The Oscars. Let me say that I was involved with some Oscar madness for private clients this year and I have to give Big Kudos to the women and men who provide the glam for the top-line red carpet celebrities. The crazetasticness of my day only gave me further appreciation for the amount of work and skill it takes to work at the Celebrity level!

When last we talked about the Oscars beauty, the neutral face/tousled hair look was all the rage and more often than not did, it did not quite work. On the other hand, the clean face with the strong, bright lip was modern and ahead of the curve. Welp, it’s been a year and the pale face, bright lip look is still making appearances on the red carpet but unfortunately it’s not looking quite so fresh this time around. On the plus side, however, there was a return to polish that was much appreciated. Most of the hair was more fittingly coiffed and looked finished and polished without looking prom-esque, and most of the makeup looked done while still looking easy and not over-worked. So fresh and so clean is always a good look and these ladies did so in style… Continue reading →

#MakeupBizTalk – The Makeup Show LA part 2

The Makeup Show Los Angeles Preview

James Vincent - Director of Education and Artistry for The Makeup Show

We at Makeup to Go! had the fortune of being able to attend the Preview and Mixer for this weekend’s Makeup Show. We let you know what will be taking place in education, now to tell you some things to look for in shopping.

OCC – As usual, OCC has a bevy of new colors added to their stable of Lip Tars. Get the new colors before anyone else at the show.

Kevyn Aucoin Cosmetics – I mentioned that they are introducing their comprehensive artists discount program at the show. As anyone familiar with the line knows they are amazing, but costly. Apparently in order to get folks hyped on the line, they will be selling products at substantial discounts. Like things that normally cost $65 available for $15-$25 level discounts. Yeah. I’ll be there.

Make Up For Ever – They are once again the Diamond Sponsor for the show, so they will have a ginormous booth once again this year. And no doubt said Ginormous Booth will be completely inundated the entire show time. IF you can make it through the crowds, MUFE will be debuting new product packaging on it’s popular color cremes, and 2 new products that will not be introduced to the public until the summer and will only be available at the show. ALSO new this year, MUFE will have all of it’s artistry and FX products available. That’s pretty cool because that includes items like the mighty Flash Palette.

Yves Saint Laurent – They are a new exhibitor this year and they are **finally** instituting a PPID program. You can apply at the show (so have your business cards and portfolio or some kind of proof with you).

Crown Brush – Crown is a staple at the shows, but new this year is a new line of brushes which are comparable to some of MAC’s most popular brushes. This is a good thing for anyone who has ever been asked if they know the “equivalent to MAC #-whatever”.

While our schedules are erratic due to this being a heavy Awards weekend, Makeup to Go! will be there at some point on both days of the show to keep you updated on all the happenings. We’ll see you at the show!

BizTalk – The Makeup Show Los Angeles

Whew! Things are crazy here at Makeup to Go! and I am working up a storm lately (yay!) but we have to make sure you’re all aware of the first of the two makeup artist trade shows that happen in LA coming this weekend.

The Makeup Show (TMUS), presented by Metropolitan Events is in it’s 3rd year in Los Angeles (it originally began in NYC) and this is set to be it’s best year yet. The two main difference between The Makeup Show and the other main makeup trade show in Los Angeles is that TMUS is open to professionals or aspiring professionals (verified students) only, and it is focused on the beauty aspect of the industry and has no FX vendors or demonstrations.

With it’s focus being on the beauty aspect of the makeup industry, this year’s installment of The Makeup Show boasts presentations from makeup luminaries such as Kristofer Buckle and Patti Dubroff as well as talented emerging artists such as Kathy Aragon and Victoria Stiles. In addition, many lines – such as Stila – will be presenting new products that will not yet be available in other locations and they will be re-instating their Pro Discount program. Likewise Kevyn Aucoin makeup will be … well they say introducing a Pro Discount program but I remember having a discount for that line before, so let’s compromise and say that program has been revamped.

Speaking of pro discounts, as one might expect the shopping at The Makeup Show is extremely serious. A lot of lines that do not show at IMATS (Stila, Smashbox, Inglot, etc.) show at TMUS, often offering show prices on their products. Artists can save themselves a nice chunk of change by planning ahead and getting vital kit items at the trade shows. I buy my Parian Spirit every show without fail.

The festivities kick off tonight (for those who have already purchased a ticket, or who have signed up for one of the hands-on education courses) with a networking soiree from 5:30-8pm which will allow attendees to meet each other along with some of the key presenters in a relaxed setting. The show proper takes place all day on Saturday and Sunday. While some of the education is paid (the hands-on courses) **most** of it is not. The workshops and seminars take place on the floor along side the vendors and exhibitors, so attendees have the opportunity to take in some great information along with shopping until we drop. Click here to see the full schedule and show information here but key workshops/seminars I’m looking forward to are;

- Women in the Industry – Saturday, Feb 26, 10am-11am featuring celebrity/beauty artist Joanna Schlip along with former artist representative Crystal Wright, artist and Sienna Cosmetics owner Eugenia Weston, and television makeup artist and cosmetics line owner Eve Pearl.

- A Career in Makeup: Kristofer Buckle
Saturday, Feb 26, 11:30am-1:00pm
~ and ~

Making Up with Pati Dubroff
Saturday, Feb 26, 3:30pm-5:00pm
Working in the rare air of high-end celebrity is a different world from what most artists experience in their careers. If you *really* want to be in that world, it will take planning to make it happen from the very start of your career. These two artists have been at the top of their games for many, many years. Hear direct from the source what it takes to get there and what it takes to stay there.

- Working in Film & Televsion, Sponsored by Make Up For Ever
Sunday, Feb 27, 12:30-1:30pm
Likewise, working in Film and Television is a completely different career path from being a print artist. It’s generally rather unrealistic when young, starry-eyed artists say they want to do it “all”. Generally some choices will have to be made. If the Film/TV side of the business tickles your fancy, here’s an opportunity to learn more about that aspect of the bz.

- In addition to the Keynote speakers, there are lots of free demonstrations taking place throughout the course of the weekend. Click here to see the schedule of workshops taking place during the show.

Even if you’re a more established/working artist … I gotta tell you I had a blast at the show last year. It’s always great to network, mingle with your peers, talk shop and shop makeup. Don’t miss a great opportunity to be a part of your professional community.

NBA All Star was last weekend and Awards Show high season ends this Sunday, so I should be less crazy and will be resuming our regularly scheduled Makeup to Go posting next week. Until then I hope to see you at The Makeup Show. :D
