#MakeupMonday – Maquillaje Para Go: Men’s Grooming

It’s time for another installment of Maquilljae Para Go written by my fab blogstress en español, Delia. Alas, whenever Delia sends me her articles she never sends me a title. Therefore this installment’s title will just have to be in English, LOL! or should I say – JaJaJa! As the title suggests we are focusing on Men’s Grooming. English translation follows below…

Zirh Sooth Post Shave Treatment

Zirh Soothe Post-Shave Treatment

- Sólo afeitado? Use un humectante para después del afeitado, como Zirh “Soothe” para calmar y aliviar la sequedad causado por el afeitado. Continue reading →

#MakeupShopping: Make Up For Ever Robertson Boulevard – LA

Make Up For Ever Los Angeles boutique

Make Up For Ever Los Angeles boutique image courtesy of MUFE

At long last I made it to the Make Up For Ever (MUFE for short) boutique in Los Angeles! I was invited to the store opening, didn’t make it. Went to the “Pro Social/Mixer”, which I wrote about. And finally after having a meeting in the same area (a section of Los Angeles I tend not to go to often) I finally said, “Let me just go to the store and see it for real this time.”. 4-ish on a Tuesday afternoon turned out to be a very good time to visit. The store was busy with clients in the artists chair, but not a zoo at all in fact I pretty much had the store to myself to look, touch and smell as makeup artists like to do.

The store is a wee little space that manages to be fully stocked with items and artists work stations without being cluttered and chaotic feeling. I am assuming that the store carries the entire line both of consumer and professional products, but I am not completely sure as unfortunately none of the artists were available to ask questions. One of the more interesting aspects of the store is that one corner is devoted to being the “Pro Atelier” area. Here they had out testers of all of the products in the store and a lighted, mirrored work area. It is described as an area for “research and inspiration” where artists can try out the products, sketch face charts if desired, etc. Apparently artists are also able to book time to bring in a client. Not sure how that would work exactly as I would guess that since this is the Make Up For Ever store they would want you to use all Make Up For Ever products. In any event I thought that was an interesting idea.

#MakeupHappenings – MUFE LA Mixer and Shecky’s Girls Night Out

Sheckys Girls Night Out LA The LookStore

Sheckys Girls Night Out LA - The LookStore's booth for The LookBag Beauty Club (event co presenter and one of the few beauty vendors at the event)

The Holiday season is underway and with it comes the start of Holiday events. I try to attend as many events as I can in general as it is important to see and be seen in this biz, but there is an extra little “something” about events during the Holidays. Two of the events I attended were open to the public and you may want to consider adding them to your Events Calendar next year.

Make Up For Ever Mixer:
Amidst much fan-fare and excitement, seminal makeup artists’ brand Make Up For Ever (MUFE) opened it’s West Coast flagship boutique this Fall. The boutique opening was a private affair, so to officially open its doors to the Los Angeles professional community the boutique held a “mixer”. For those who’ve never attended one, a mixer is basically a professional excuse to get together and have drinks with peers and colleagues. There was music and energy, goodie bags were given to attendees (a sample of the now iconic HD powder and a tube of MUFE’s waterproof mascara which is pretty much the only waterproof mascara I have found to be vaguely tolerable), wine was poured, and all of the store’s product selection was on display. #MakeupMonday – MaquillajeParaGo: Encantada con Labial Rojo

photo of red lipstick swatches

Red lipstick. Outgoing, sexy, bold and daring, red is the Porche Carrera Cabriolet of lip colors yet so many women are afraid to wear it! To help you quell this fear, for this month’s installment of Maquillaje Para Go Delia is covering the best in red lipsticks. Enjoy… (English translation follows below…)

Continue reading →

#MakeupMonday – The Basics: Face Powders

T. LeClerc Face Poudre in Banane

T. LeClerc Poudre Libre en Banane

I have a confession: I LOVE face powder. Love Love Lovey Love Love. It softens colors, smooths the complexion, helps blending, erases mistakes, sets the makeup, on and on. It’s a wonder product! Yet I find most women simply wonder “What am I supposed to do with this?” Let me assure you: Once you get the right formulation and learn to use it the right way, you too will be a convert. As I have stated before I am planning a series of video tutorials and probably one of my first ones will be using powder correctly but in the meantime in The Basics we will cover some of the best powders out there and what makes a powder one of the best. NOTE: I am really only talking about loose powders in this article. Yes, I know many of you are more used to pressed powders. Pressed powders are great for touching up, but they are not the wonder product that is loose powder. If you are really fixated on pressed powder, most of these brands make pressed powder versions of these loose powder products. I invite you, however, to allow loose powder to sweep you off of your feet… Continue reading →

#MakeupMonday – Vibrant Color

A trend that emerged from the runways of Fashion Week Spring 2011 collections was Vibrant Color. Yay! Enough with the dark Gothic look or the monochromatic “no makeup” looks. Color is playful, uplifting and makes us look fresh and young. From subtly “there” to loud and proud, there are plenty of products to get you started. And fear not, there will be many more products to come as this trend develops into the new year.

Stila Cosmetics Color Wheel Eyeshadow Palette
Stila – Color Wheel Palette
This is one of the most genius palettes I’ve ever seen. I think one of the reasons more women don’t wear color (or why some who do don’t get it quite right) is simply because they don’t know how. Artists working in any medium get to know color and color relationships by using the color wheel. How ingenious is it to make an eyeshadow palette based on the Color Wheel!?! Not only are the colors laid out in a way that is very user friendly, the palette comes with pro tips and tricks for best looks and ideas. Genius! Continue reading →

#MakeupMonday – Event Makeup

I recently went makeup shopping with friend and colleague, Kallah Maguire – stylist and owner of The Emerald Scarab – and she echoed a complaint I hear fairly often from women; How do I stay looking great when I have an event to attend? Like many busy professionals, Kallah regularly attends events where she not only wants to look great for herself, but where she’s frequently photographed. Why is it that when we attend these events we look so different from when we see photos of celebs at events? Well, most women do their makeup as they normally do when in fact, they should approach these functions as photographic events. When we professional makeup artists do celebrities for Events, please believe, we pull out every makeup trick in the book.

1 ) Don’t Over Do It – Resist the temptation to apply “more”. It’ll cake up, crease up, oil up and generally be difficult to maintain. Also, while you want to look good when the camera flashes, you also want to look good to the person you’re talking to standing in front of you. Hyper makeup looks crazy in real life. Use as much as you need, but not a drop more. Continue reading →

Discounts… Get Your Discounts Here…

Without question one of the more difficult aspects of being a budding new makeup artist is developing a working kit. Lots of places tell you about all these great, new, fun products that you just have to have and it’s difficult to know how to pare down and get what you NEED and to do it in a way that is cost effective for you. Well, here at Makeup to Go! I try my best to talk about what you need vs what’s cool to have in one consolidated place where you can have good information, and there are a few other good pro blogs that do the same. Nigel’s Beauty Emporium has stepped up to the affordability plate by providing you One Stop Shopping for you to get all of your cosmetics lines discounts (of the lines that they carry).

Now, instead of having to run to this store to get that line, another store the get this line and go to the line’s website to get the other, Nigel’s – for Qualified Applicants – will honor many cosmetics lines discount, including the 40% Artists Discount for Makeup For Ever. What do you need to do? Well, aye, there’s the rub; same as when you apply to a line directly for a discount, you will still need to apply and be qualified for a discount. Obviously, cosmetics lines extend these discounts as a professional courtesy for the Trade and they are not available to consumers otherwise the lines would go out of business fairly quickly. In fact, the reason some lines either changed their policies for qualification or started to charge for their discount card was to curb the number of unscrupulous artists who would buy product at a discount and then sell them on eBay or the like. Not smart, that only ends up biting all of us on the backside. It used to be enough to just show your book, but nowadays most companies want more. Most cosmetics lines require either a Union Card, a Cosmetology license and or a combination of a letter (or some sort of proof) from an agency and either a couple of tears or a tear and a call sheet or the like, and that’s what I was asked to provide to Nigel’s when I applied for their program. These are very reasonable requests for anyone who is working. If you don’t have these items, many lines have instituted discount “tiers” for students, non-makeup artist professionals (like models and actors), etc. so Nigel’s may as well. Full details on their program are available at their store. Don’t be shy, stop by Nigel’s and see what level of discount you may qualify for and get your kit shopping on. (Nigel’s will also be an exhibitor at the Makeup Show trade show coming up next week. Look for more details on that in a future post).

Holiday Makeup Shopping

It’s the Holidays! The holidays means so many different things; fabulous food, time with family, tradition, spectacle… and for the makeup fanatic = holiday makeup sets. Every year I go crazy buying 5 times more makeup than I normally would because of these delectably seductive little sets. Whether you keep them yourself, or give them as gifts they’re just the perfect little beauty Pick Me Up… here’s the best of the bunch for 2009 (IMHO ;) )

Top Ten Makeup Products Without Which I Would Die

As a makeup enthusiast and product junkie I love knowing what’s new in makeup-landia; what the trends are, what the hot new brands are, etc. As a makeup artist, however, I have to temper my enthusiasm with what works. Sometimes all you have 10-15 minutes to do the job and it needs to look like you spent an hour. This is where your Stand By products come in. No time for experimentation; I need to reach in, grab a product, and know exactly what it’s going to do. If you’re an aspiring artist, take note as many of these products are unilaterally loved by makeup artists all over. Makeup aficionados take note as many of these products are what artists are actually using, even when they say they’re using something else. ;)

Here then are my Top Ten products: Continue reading →
