The International Makeup Artist Trade Show – the second of the two major LA-based makeup trade shows – took place this past weekend. This was the first year in IMATS’s history that the Los Angeles show completely sold out (IMATS originated in LA back in 1997). In fact, we here at Makeup to Go almost missed this show entirely. As a pro makeup artist (and same with my en Español partner, Delia Jimenez Owens) I do not always know whether or not my schedule is going to be open to attend the trade shows. Beauty Biz – Upcoming Trade Shows

While there are only two Trade show dedicated solely to the craft of Makeup (IMATS and The Makeup Show), the beauty business is a full-time, 24-7 industry and there are lots of associated trade-shows that might be beneficial for you to attend and participate in depending on the aspect of the industry you work in and/or plan to work in. Most of these other shows have to do with the salon, spa and bridal end of the beauty biz spectrum. Before you turn up your nose, bear this in mind – there is now and will always be more opportunity in those market segments than there is in the media makeup biz. Media makeup is incredibly competitive and doesn’t even exist in all markets. Explore all the facets of the industry, and you just may find the perfect fit for you. (Note – different trade show have different requirements for entrance and some may need you to be a state-licensed technician in order to purchase a ticket so find out the requirements before you buy.) A Tale of Two Trade Shows

The Powder Group’s Makeup Show (TMUS) vs. Makeup Magazine’s International Makeup Artist Trade Show (IMATS) 2009

This post is intended for all the aspiring pro makeup artists in the house. Every industry has it’s trade shows and the beauty biz is no exception. Being a professional in the industry, I’ve always felt a need to attend them as often as schedule permits, if only to shop and walk around and see what’s new in makeup-landia. IBS – the International Beauty Show – services the salon professional. Being a media artist (Print, TV, Film) I never really attend IBS. However there are two shows vying for attention in my spectrum of the business; The Makeup Show (TMUS) and the International Makeup Artists Trade Show (IMATS) Continue reading →
