#Maquillaje Para Go: Exposición Internacional de Maquillaje (IMATS)

International Makeup Artist Trade Show Los Angeles

As the other half of the MTG writing team, Delia shares her experiences and impressions of this year’s IMATS. As always, the English version follows below…

Sale Alert – Stila Online Warehouse Sale

Stila One Step Foundation

Stila One Step Foundation - gone but not forgotten

Stila is currently having it’s Semi Annual Online Warehouse Sale . What caught my eye and why I’m posting about it is that they are apparently either discontinuing or re-formulating their fabulous One Step Foundation, which is a primer and foundation all in one formula. This was one of my favorite foundations to recommend for daily wear (as opposed to the foundations I use for photography) so I’m bummed if it is being discontinued. In any event, whether you are one of the many ladies whom I’ve introduced this product to, or you have been looking for a comfortable daily wear foundation with light but complete coverage, you may want to stock up before this product is all gone… In addition to the One Step Foundation, other sale items of note just on cursory glance are

- Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer

- select shades of the ever popular and fab Lip Glazes

- select shades of the single Eye Shadow Pans including some of the mattes

- several palettes including the fabulous Color Wheel palette that was introduced last year

So run don’t walk and get ‘em while you can! Stila Semi Annual Online Warehouse Sale .

#MakeupMonday – IMATS Pasadena 2011

IMATS2011floor

The International Makeup Artist Trade Show – the second of the two major LA-based makeup trade shows – took place this past weekend. This was the first year in IMATS’s history that the Los Angeles show completely sold out (IMATS originated in LA back in 1997). In fact, we here at Makeup to Go almost missed this show entirely. As a pro makeup artist (and same with my en Español partner, Delia Jimenez Owens) I do not always know whether or not my schedule is going to be open to attend the trade shows. By the time I got my schedule sorted, I missed a lot of cool new features for Professional Artists that IMATS instituted for this years show AND regular admissions tickets were almost sold out. As it turned out, I was able to get tickets for the MTG crew for Sunday and we were able to attend the show for the day. So here’s a wrap-up of what I saw and what I bought… Continue reading →

#MakeupMonday – The Basics: Lip Moisturizers

Anita Grant Lippy Pucker Lip Balm

Anita Grant Lippy Pucker Lip Balm - Original

I have been a working makeup artist – meaning having people pay me for makeup with little or no ‘side gigs’ necessary – for going on 10 years now. I work largely with media clients although in the last few years I have started teaching a bit and also working with private clients. When you’re in the makeup biz you really do think about product a lot. Therefore for me as a beauty blogger, when I write about makeup I tend to gravitate to the latest and greatest or things that I’ve found that help me with my photographic work or things of that nature. I am frequently reminded, however, that “normal people” (aka – non makeup artists) do not think about these things at all, they just want some basic products that work so they can look their best and go on about their way. Reality is – when women find out I’m a makeup artist – they are MUCH more likely to ask me what is the best mascara or moisturizer than they are to ask about some esoteric micro makeup brand. Let’s be real: they’ve never heard of the esoteric micro-makeup brand, nor do they particularly care. Over the next few Makeup Mondays I will be going back and revisiting some basics. These are the things that real women ask me about all the time and all the time. Being a pro makeup artist I’ve gone through umpteen brands of each type of product and these are the ones that make my cut.

Now – A word about what I look for in a lip balm: First and foremost anything Petroleum based is out. Some folks love Petroleum based lip-balms and if that’s you and it is working for you then great. Keep doing you. I do not like Petroleum based lip-balms at all. They do not actually moisturize, in my opinion, nor do I like the way they feel (greasy) and then as a makeup artist I cannot use them under lip color because they make the color “slip”. Therefore there will be no Carmex, Chapstick, Rosebud Salve (although I LOVE Rosebud salve for other things), or even the ever popular Keihl’s Lip Balm #1. I look for balms that are creamy in texture and feel and are derived from natural oils often in some kind of an oil/water emulsion formula. Here then are my picks of fabulous lip moisturizers. #MakeupMonday Special Edition – Notes from the NYC Makeup Show

If you follow my blog for my creative industries clients where I talk about the jobs I’m currently doing, you ‘ll note that I’ve been working like a maniac of late. As such, I did not get to go back east to hit the NYC edition of Metropolitan Events The Makeup Show. Have no fear, however, because friends of Makeup to Go exist in all parts of the globe.

Our friend and comrade NYC Makeup Artist Kim Weber was there front and center for this years Show. While she was only able to attend one day due to her own busy work schedule, that one day was chocked full of Makeup Goodness that we thought you might be interested in. Kim was so kind as to let us repost part of her blog post for our Makeup to Go readers. Kim, take it away!

#MakeupMonday – Spring Fling 2011

Happy Spring!

Today is the official first day of spring, but if you are experiencing the kind of weather I am, it does not yet feel like it! Even here in “sunny” California we are having cold and rain, and actually I went on a camping trip this past weekend and had to deal with driving wind, rain, hail and even some snow. Yikes! Weather like that only makes feeling pretty with bright fresh color seem all the more special and important. All the cosmetics lines have been rolling out their Spring collections for the past few weeks and after having tried some*, here’s my picks for the some of the best of the lot.

sonia kashuk cosmetics great awakenings face palette
1 ) Sonia Kashuk Cosmetics – Great Awakenings Face Palette
At the top of the list has to be this fantastic palette by Sonia Kashuk Cosmetics. Included are 4 “more than” neutral eye-colors, a deep brown powder/cake eyeliner, a perfect pinky/peachy blush and three pretty lipglosses. All for $19.99! And if you have never tried Sonia Kashuk Cosmetics, her line is en par with any department store brand, full stop. I cannot big-up the Sonia Kashuk line enough, they are definitely my favorite mass-market brand. This palette is yet another reason why. NOTE: This palette is a limited edition item so run don’t walk!

Iman Cosmetics Eye-Con Collection
2 ) Iman Cosmetics – Eye-Con Collection
My other favorite mass market brand is Iman, and Iman Cosmetics makes luxury affordable for women of color. The Eye-Con palette is a fantastic addition to the line because so often women of color cannot join in on the fun, trendy spring colors because most (non-professional) eyeshadows are not pigmented enough to show on darker skin-tones. Iman has adapted all the “trend colors” for spring into pigmented yet wearable formulations that go on smoothly and last long. This is a great palette.

Jouer Cosmetics Glisten Brightening Powder
3 ) Jouer Cosmetics Glisten Up collection
Jouer’s Glisten Up collection is exactly what you want for Spring: light and airy colors and formulations to brighten you up from the doldrums of winter. Taking a cue from the last series of Fashion Week runways, Jouer has gone with a shimmer inspired theme. My favorite item out of the collection is the versatile Glisten Brightening Powder. We Makeup Artists swear by products like these to add sheen and light to the face and body. What is particularly nice about Jouer’s version is it is finely milled so your face is glowy not sparkle-y. The lipglosses are sparkle-y so a little goes a long way, but a touch in the center of the lower lip makes lips look fuller or a sheer sweep over the entire lip takes your face from day to night in an instant.

Maquillage Givenchy Siena Silhouette eye palette
4 ) Givenchy Collection Printemps-Eté Naïvement Couture –
Leave it to the French to interpret Spring quite differently. This collection features some of the “light and airy” color stories that you would expect for spring, but mixed in are interesting smokier, sultrier combinations. Givenchy is famous for their “Prisme Quads” which are 4 complimentary colors in one palette which can be used singularly or in any combination to achieve a myriad of colors. Not necessarily for a makeup newbie, but for the serious artiste Givenchy products are consistently amazing.

Paul and Joe Beauty Lipstick C
5 ) Paul and Joe – Parasol Collection
Paul and Joe is an “atelier” line out of France which I love. They are kind of “cult” and rather difficult to get, although it’s becoming easier since making their way into Beauty Habit and some Sephora stores. Los Angeles makeup artists and other makeup-istas in the know have always had access to them via the fabulous Beauty Closet store. What I love about this collection are the colors – which are the perfect kind of pastel, IMO, soft but not too “white” in cast – and the rich formulations. Paul and Joe cosmetics really feel like no other…and they wear incredibly well. Often times softer colors drift and either fade away or do not stay “true”. Once you apply these colors they are on and they stay on and stay the same beautiful color. My personal pick is the Lipstick C which comes in three shades of perfectly pretty pinks (color shown is “Afternoon Delight”).

*I generally do not review a product until I have actually tried it in some form of a Real World application, usually on one of my jobs/photoshoots. While I do receive product as a professional makeup artist (usually from editorial credits), none of the products discussed were given to me. These are all products I have purchased to try out in my Kit.
