#MakeupMonday – 2012 Red Carpet Beauty

In past incarnations of Makeup to Go! awards season coverage I have broken down what I felt were some of the best beauty looks on awards attendees at each show. While I may do that again in the future we’re going to skip that this year, as it felt like things were getting a bit repetitive. Instead, using last night’s Sag Awards as my example, I am going to break down the components of what I feel make a successful Red Carpet look which are the same elements you and I would use for our big nights on the town.

1 ) It’s The Skin, Silly

While it is fine and actually probably preferable to skip foundation on the day to day, it does not work to do so for Event makeup. Whenever photographs are going to be taken what is the predominant feature you see? The skin! Therefore care must be taken to ensure that the face is even, seamless, matte and flawless. Trust me a lot of the men of the red carpet are wearing a little sumthin’ sumthin’ as well. Did I mention matte? Yes. Sheen does not read well under lights. What might be a pretty in normal circumstances can turn to shine or even worse look sweaty under the bright lights. Any use of highlight/illuminzing must be well controlled for a successful Red Carpet look. Special Note; because of the way darker skin reflects light keeping things matte is particularly true for us deeper complexion gals. My complexion is somewhere around that of SAG Award winning actress Viola Davis. Her artist did a very good job of adding some subtle highlights in the cheeks but keeping the forehead, nose, and chin matte so her overall look is even and flawless. Congrats to Ms. Davis!

Award Show Watch – Oscars 2011

2011 awards show season is a wrap with the passing of the biggest awards show of them all – the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards, aka The Oscars. Let me say that I was involved with some Oscar madness for private clients this year and I have to give Big Kudos to the women and men who provide the glam for the top-line red carpet celebrities. The crazetasticness of my day only gave me further appreciation for the amount of work and skill it takes to work at the Celebrity level!

When last we talked about the Oscars beauty, the neutral face/tousled hair look was all the rage and more often than not did, it did not quite work. On the other hand, the clean face with the strong, bright lip was modern and ahead of the curve. Welp, it’s been a year and the pale face, bright lip look is still making appearances on the red carpet but unfortunately it’s not looking quite so fresh this time around. On the plus side, however, there was a return to polish that was much appreciated. Most of the hair was more fittingly coiffed and looked finished and polished without looking prom-esque, and most of the makeup looked done while still looking easy and not over-worked. So fresh and so clean is always a good look and these ladies did so in style… Continue reading →

Award Show Watch: Golden Globes 2011

When I decided the Makeup to Go! blog would cover red carpet beauty, the Golden Globes were the first awards show I covered. It’s hard to believe it’s already been a year and Awards season is back upon us, but yet here we are.

The Golden Globes is one of the more formal awards shows, and as such the beauty and fashion generally reflects this fact although there were a few people who dared to take a chance (and then there are those who went beyond a chance, cue Helena Bonham Carter …. whose makeup actually looks good now that I look at it but who can tell with all that outfit happening). While I’m always a fan of clean looks, playing it too safe threw quite a few people into the “washed out” category with nothing that made their face “pop”. I also felt that there are a few ladies who could stand to change their look right about now. It is one thing to have a “signature style” and it’s another to kind of be trapped in a mode. However as always, some starlets managed to trip the light fantastic and make wonderful red carpet appearances. These are the ladies who I thought hit their marks perfectly. Continue reading →

Award Show Watch: MTV Video Music Awards 2010

I’d been looking forward to doing a write-up on the VMAs. I’ve worked the VMAs many a time, and I did makeup for a couple of ladies who were attending the ceremonies this year. In contrast to all of the other awards shows I’ve covered, the VMAs are where Over The Top is queen. This is the show to be as edgy as you dare in hair, makeup and dress. As we all know, however, it’s a fine line between being cutting edge and trying to hard. Some get the balance right and look Hot to Death, and others miss and look a Hot Mess. Whatever the look the artists are going for, in my opinion the VMAs are not the time to go mamby pamby.

…. and then there was this year…

The economy must have spirits down because – save for a few folks and one very notable exception – this year’s showing seemed quite sedate. Not so much that people looked bad (well, there were a few misses), but it seemed a lot of people played it safe and looked like they would at any awards show. Part of the problem is that as MTV has become less and less about music, more and more of the attendees are actresses/actors and other assorted culture vultures instead of musicians. Hence there was a lot of standard “starlet” and “cool guy” looks on display. Disappointing. Slim pickins this year both on the red carpet and in the performance looks but there were a few folks who caught my eye this time around.

Hayley Williams of Paramore – I don’t know Paramore, but I dug lead singer Hayley Williams’ look. When you’re wearing extreme bright hair like that, *I* think it’s best to let it be the star of the show and not try to wear competing makeup. That said, however, it’s important not to have too bare of a face lest one look undone. Using a light hand with the makeup and keeping a monochromatic color palette that subtly picked up the hair color perked up her face without going clowntastic, and really looked pretty against her pale skin. Well played.

Eva Pigford – Eva “The Diva” (does anyone still call her that?) was a good example of how – if you aren’t a musician and you are, in fact, a starlet, you can still look event appropriate. Eva’s look was edgy and young and befitting of a music awards show, not like she was going to a luncheon and not like she was going to the Oscars. Her wardrobe was really ‘the thing’ to her look, but the short, blonde ‘do brings out her bone structure and features and gives her a more current look than long tresses would, and then she just ramped up the eyes and called it a day. The end result was a great look.

Taylor Swift – Her retro look really works for her. It gives her just the right touch of glam without making her look old or drag-ish.

Lady GaGa – Speaking of drag-ish, if you’re gonna go there be sure to go all the way there. Lady GaGa knows this well and she isn’t afraid to do it! I didn’t love the headpeice wig thingme just because it’s a tough to pull off, rather flat color however her makeup artist did a good job of using a neutral palette to warm her face back up so she didn’t go in a goth-y direction. Her makeup is actually really beautifully done with emphasis on really beautiful skin and highlight and contour. There is a lot of makeup in this look, but by refraining from using a lot of color, the neutral palette provides a flattering backdrop to all the foolywang-ness of color and pattern that was going on in her Alexander McQueen gown. Not a look for the everyday, but in my opinion a look that’s what the VMAs are all about.

Award Show Watch: BET Awards 2010

I actually missed this year’s BET awards and had to watch it on a re-run. In past years I’ve actually had the pleasure of making up faces attending the awards, but this year I was out of town. This year was kind of a mixed bag. Both on the Red Carpet and on the awards stage, looks – IMO – were either Over The Top or not quite done enough. I attribute this to having the event take place during the day on the West Coast so that it can be aired at night on the East Coast. There was a vibe of “what kind of event am I dressing for??” in the air.

I say – when in doubt, go for Classic Beauty. No one has ever been dinged for looking too beautiful. Edgy can backfire if you don’t get it just right. Casual can look like you didn’t care. Beautiful is always the right answer. Here’s who got it right in my estimation. Continue reading →

Award Show Watch: Oscars 2010

Old Hollywoood glamour. Grandieur. Extravaganza. That is what the Oscars are known for and what past years have delivered.

This year was no exception fashion-wise, but hair and makeup-wise… hmmmm…. Whenever the fashion shows are really neutral as they were this past season, there’s a collective “uh-oh” throughout the makeup community because – contrary to popular belief – neutral is actually fairly difficult to do and to wear. Most women look better with color on their face. The Red Carpet for the Oscars was no exception. The one variance on the “neutral” rule for the fashion shows this past Fashion Week was the neutral face with the strong lip. The celebs whose artists did a version of that look faired much better on the “Step and Repeat” than their all-neutral counterparts. Another runway trend that is difficult to translate to real life is “tousled” hair. It’s a fine line between tousled and un-done. In all, with a lot of washed out faces and not entirely there hair, there were several people who had aspects of their look that were good, but very few who hit it from head to toe. Let’s talk about those who did hit the nail on the head… Continue reading →

Award Show Watch: Grammys 2010

Ah the Grammys…. what can you say? The music industry is a very different look from the film industry. There is more emphasis on looking edgy and even glamourous looks will have a bit of edge to keep them forward looking. When it works, the look can be spectacular. When it doesn’t… well…

Picking out the best of for the Grammy’s was a bit more challenging than the Golden Globes. To be honest, there was a lot of Just OK in my opinion. Personal taste aside, there was also a lot of the same look going on. All of my makeup friends made the same comments all over Twitter – too many smokey eyes going on, and all pretty much the same heavy black/charcoal smokey eye. That’s the thing – smokey eyes can actually vary quite a bit, can be achieved through the use of a lot of different colors and create a look that is both dramatic and new and fresh. Alas, most ladies stick to the heavy black/charcoal variety. A well done dark smokey eye is never a bad look, but lets just say it’s a look that’s been around for a long time now if you catch my drift..

Ankywhoo, with that said let’s celebrate who came strong with the hair and makeup… Continue reading →

Award Show Watch: Golden Globes 2010

We are in the midst of Awards season and the first major event is a wrap. As a makeup artist, celebrity is not my focus. I do a few celebrity clients on occasion, but overall it’s not been the focus of my career (this is probably because as a person celebrity is not my focus). That said, I do think it’s important to keep abreast of trends as to keep your own makeup current, as either a professional makeup artist or as a makeup consumer. Celebrity makeup artists are amongst those who set the trends so seeing what their clients are wearing are good indicators of directions to take with your own makeup looks.

Some of the makeup/hair looks that I think are worth a mention; Continue reading →
