#MakeupBizTalk – Last Good Day of the Year

Early on in my career, the end of the year would generally slow down for me so I would assume “Oh, Okay. There isn’t much work in the industry this time of year.” and settle for not working. It is easy to think this way what with the holidays and people leaving town, etc. Oh how wrong I was and if you are still thinking this way how wrong you are. In the years since then I have worked right up until and sometimes ON major holidays (I did a job once actually on Thanksgiving Day) and then right up through the new year. This is a year round industry. If you are a junior artist there is a Key artist working who could use an assistant and if you are a Key artist, someone out there is booking a job right now. Even for those of you who focus on Bridal – in October I worked with a hairstylist who said that Fall is her busiest time and I have a bridal makeup artist friend who is booking into 2013. No matter what facet of the industry you are in, there is work happening all the time. Here are my thoughts on how you can stay in the game and prepare yourself for the coming year so you can keep working all year round…

1 ) Just keep marketing. If people are not interested they will decline to respond. Simple as that. Do not make the mistake of taking yourself out of the game by stopping your marketing plan. Continue reading →

Guest Post: Beauty Social Event Presented by Beautylish

20111026-113118.jpg

We here at Makeup to Go! try to make as many beauty events as possible. When we cannot make one, however, its likely one of our friends did attend. Such was the case with the Beautylish Beauty Social Event (sponsored by CoverFX) which took place October 22-23, 2011 in Santa Monica, CA. Friend, colleague and professional makeup artist Rebecca Liceaga – President and Founder of Bridal Makeup Artists.com – was able to attend on the second day and was so kind as to write about it the event for us. Rebecca, take it away…

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to attend Beautylish’s first ever Beauty Social Event at the Loews Beach Hotel in Santa Monica, CA. It was a chance for beauty lovers, online beauty bloggers, and dare I say a few celebrities to chat, visit and learn more about some amazing brands as well as get to know each other. In addition to some amazing panels with notables such as celebrity makeup artists Billy B, Jeffrey Paul, and Nyeesa Green, noted beauty bloggers such as Kandee Johnson and AfroBella but also brand creators Carol Shaw of LORAC Cosmetics, Jerrod Blandino of Too Faced Cosmetics, Jenny Frankel of Cover FX and Marissa Shipman from TheBalm Cosmetics. With two days chock full of presentations and panels, there was enough information, advice, tips and tricks given to last the entire year. Continue reading →

#MakeupBizTalk – Makeup/Hair Wanted: Deciphering the Madness

He Said Tee Shed I Am An Artist T-Shirt

He Said Tee Shed - I Am An Artist T-Shirt for ordering info click photo or see below

In my Lessons for Aspiring Artists™ Workshops I conduct a segment on how to decipher the utter nonsense jobs that are posted on various online boards daily. This one got my gall today:

Hi there, we are a low budget production looking for an up and coming hair and make-up individual.
Needed for a film shoot on Date X and Date X.

Nothing fancy. The pay is $50 per day and will give you on screen credit.
Please send any samples of your work. Thank you.**

Ugh. There are just soooo many things wrong with this posting. Let us go through it, shall we? Continue reading →

On The Set: Clothing Company Shoot in SF Bay Area

Much of the feedback I’ve received recently is that Makeup to Go! readers wished I would incorporate more of my working life in this blog. I hadn’t done so because I’ve usually kept that on my blog for my media clients, but if that’s what y’all want to read your wish is my command! :) Thus I bring you a new feature “On The Set” where I will highlight a particularly cool job on which I have recently worked. Things you will note about this column are: 1 ) I am vague about who the client is and 2 ) I do not clearly show the product or models in the shoots. This is out of respect for the client as it is poor social media etiquette to put things on complete blast before the final product is out. All you aspiring makeup artists bear that in mind when posting about projects you are working on. Continue reading →

Youngblood Cosmetics: Endless Beauty Event

Youngblood Cosmetics Endless Beauty

Youngblood Cosmetics Endless Beauty

At a recent trade show, I stopped by the Youngblood Cosmetics booth with no intention to purchase anything and I walked away with 2 artist palettes. This has since proven to be one of the best makeup purchases I have made in quite some time and I’ve used the palettes on 95% of the jobs I have done since purchasing them. Needless to say then, when I found out about Youngblood Cosmetics Endless Beauty Event I was excited to attend and learn more about the line. The event took place this past Friday, July 22, at Siren studios in Hollywood, a well known location for LA media makeup artists. I was curious to see how Youngblood was going to transform the space into something suitable for a cosmetics education and networking event. It turned out the upstairs studio was perfect, with two “salon” rooms – one where the Youngblood artists could do makeovers, and one where all the Youngblood Cosmetics products could be displayed so attendees could see, touch and play with the products – and then the main area was set up for demonstrations and education. #Maquillaje Para Go: Exposición Internacional de Maquillaje (IMATS)

International Makeup Artist Trade Show Los Angeles

As the other half of the MTG writing team, Delia shares her experiences and impressions of this year’s IMATS. As always, the English version follows below…

It Is Not Workshop Time….

OK so there are more than a few exciting developments are taking place with regards to how I want to conduct my workshops moving forward (product sponsorship, facilities, and my “patented” teaching methodology) that are necessitating my moving the workshops into the New Year. Trust me: It will be worth the wait! Teaching is a passion, not my primary money maker. I still work primarily as an on-set artist. I teach because working with new artists inspires me and it is my way of giving back to the makeup community. Therefore – I do not ever want to do just any ole class. I want my classes to ROCK!

In the meantime as many emerging artists were interested in my classes, bear in mind that I do teach private lessons as well as small groups and those can be arranged more easily on a more flexible schedule. Please Email Us for more information or you can Visit Here to read about the options. Thanks so much for your patience (and thanks to those who’d already signed up for their flexibility) and I look forward to fabulous classes in 2012!

#MakeupMonday – IMATS Pasadena 2011

The International Makeup Artist Trade Show – the second of the two major LA-based makeup trade shows – took place this past weekend. This was the first year in IMATS’s history that the Los Angeles show completely sold out (IMATS originated in LA back in 1997). In fact, we here at Makeup to Go almost missed this show entirely. As a pro makeup artist (and same with my en Español partner, Delia Jimenez Owens) I do not always know whether or not my schedule is going to be open to attend the trade shows. By the time I got my schedule sorted, I missed a lot of cool new features for Professional Artists that IMATS instituted for this years show AND regular admissions tickets were almost sold out. As it turned out, I was able to get tickets for the MTG crew for Sunday and we were able to attend the show for the day. So here’s a wrap-up of what I saw and what I bought… Continue reading →

#MakeupBizTalk – The Art of the Freebie

Blank Magazine Issue #58

© P. De Luna / Makeup and Hair Tania D. Russell

Don’t be duped, but don’t let opportunity pass you by…

There is a fabulous website entitled “Should I Work for Free” which features a flow chart of all the possible if/when situations that a freelancer might face when approached for unpaid work from a client. It serves as a good reminder that it is not just makeup artists who are constantly approached for freebie “gigs” all the time. All freelancers are, particularly those in the Creative industries, particularly in a down economy. Basically, as you can see on the chart, most roads lead to “No” – which is as it should be. But why is it, as a freelancer, so difficult to say “No”? Because as a freelancer networking is part of the game and you really do never know where or when opportunity might strike. People often say “well would your mechanic work for free” and the answer is rightfully No, but that hardline/black and white attitude doesn’t really work in a field where your success is greatly dependent upon constant marketing and networking. Here are my tips for deciding whether or not to take an unpaid gig. Continue reading →
